The benefits of change management cannot be overstated, and it can help you navigate your business or organization through challenging times. To state the obvious, we are living during challenging times to be sure. So, what benefits can be realized by proactively and thoughtfully working toward an effective change management? More than you can imagine!
Simply put, change management is directing and controlling change or development within an organization. Change management is about driving the train rather than being run over by it. Often, the term change management is used in situations where organizations are making organizational change, but it certainly applies to the upheaval we’re all experiencing during the era of the COVID-19 pandemic. Just think about how much has changed since mid-March, 2020. How are you operating differently today compared to then? Imagine the benefits your employees, your company, your customers, and ultimately your company’s bottom line could experience if you proactively worked to prepare and support your team through the necessary changes that are happening as a result of the pandemic and shutdown-induced economic downturn associated with it?
“The greatest danger in times of turbulence is not the turbulence—it is to act with yesterday’s logic.” ~ Peter Drucker
The Greek philosopher Heraclitus coined the quote, “Change is the only constant in life.” Truer words were never spoken, but we are living in a time of extreme change. If your business is like most, you’ve had to retool a number of things over the past months. Are your people working remotely? Have your public hours of operation shifted or been reduced? Are your employees dealing with children who are schooling remotely for the start of this academic year? Have you had to rely more on telephone or video conferencing to meet with your team members or with current and future customers? Have you had to acquire new technology or equipment to successfully continue to function? Have you had staffing changes or reductions? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are not alone.
Often, just knowing you’re not alone is an important key to moving through tough situations. And I have terrific news for you—change management can ease the anxiety you may be feeling and the bumpy ride your business may be experiencing. This is where the benefits of an effective change management plan start to appear. Devising a blueprint to move your people and your company through these challenging and often frustrating times will help give you a framework for how to plan, implement, and communicate any necessary changes. It will take some thoughtful planning on your part, but the dividends will pay off for years to come.
